Non-profit organization names Longview among 213 'Playful City USA' communities

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today's children spend less time playing outside than any previous generation, but 213 cities and towns, including Longview, earned recognition from national non-profit KaBOOM! as 2012 Playful City USA communities for their efforts to increase play opportunities for children.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, play is critical to healthy brain development. It allows children to use their creativity while simultaneously developing imagination, dexterity and physical, cognitive and emotional strength. Yet today's children spend less time playing outside than any previous generation in part because only 1-in-5 live within walking distance of a park or playground. The resulting play deficit is having profound consequences for kids physically, socially and academically.

Presented by The Humana Foundation, Playful City USA is a national program advocating for local policies that increase play opportunities for children and is a key platform in combating the play deficit.

Cowlitz Sheriff investigating vandalism at county park

Cowlitz Sheriff investigating vandalism at county park

LEXINGTON, Wash. -- Cowlitz County Sheriff's Office is investigating the recent vandalism at Riverside County Park in Lexington, which is four miles north of Kelso.

Sometime between April 20 and today, someone spray painted the bathroom walls with graffiti and drawings. The writing includes "SSL13" which is typically understood to be a label for the South Side Locos gang, which is a loose-knit group of teenagers known for destructive tagging around the Kelso area. There is also a drawing of the face of Joker that was done on the bathroom wall.

The parks department will be working to remove the paint, or cover it up. Investigators from the sheriff's office hope the public can help identify the culprits by calling in any information to Deputy Andy Nunes at 360-577-3092 or crime stoppers at 360-577-1206.

Feb. 15-16 workshop to shape new streetscape look for Commerce Avenue

LONGVIEW, Wash. -- Commerce Avenue should be a safe and attractive destination point that strengthens the downtown Longview economy. That's the conclusion of the 2011 Downtown Action Agenda adopted last year by the City of Longview. Now, the City is hosting a two-day streetscape design workshop on Feb. 15-16 to move that vision to reality.

Urban designers will be on hand at the workshop to capture peoples' ideas visually and create preliminary designs for a new look for Commerce Avenue. The workshop will be held in the Korten Building, 1400 Commerce Ave. in downtown Longview.

The workshop will be open continuously from noon to 8 p.m. Feb. 15 and again from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Feb. 16.

"The workshop offers a unique format for people to see their ideas captured in real time," says Steve Langdon, planning manager. "You can drop in just once for an hour, or come by several times over the two days to see designs evolve."

How much do you know about Longview's new neighborhood cleanup program?

LONGVIEW, Wash. -- Does your neighborhood have one or more properties that need a little attention because of overgrown vegetation or an accumulation of trash? Do some of your neighbor’s just need a little help but may not have funds to do a good cleanup of their property? Or, is it just time for spring cleaning?

If so, Longview city officials have introduced its new NEAT program. The Neighborhood Excellence Action Team program, referred to as NEAT, was created to offer your neighborhood the opportunity to collect and dispose of unwanted trash, bulky waste, and yard debris for free. The NEAT program is a partnership between the City of Longview and neighborhoods within the city limits.

The program allows your neighborhood to receive drop boxes for the disposal of excess trash, bulky waste, and yard debris. These boxes and their disposal costs are free to those residing in your neighborhood. In return, the City asks that you gather the volunteers to plan and run your event.
